Ward-Brodt String Blog

Violin calculations:

  • 23 ¾” or longer = 4/4 (Full size)
  • 22 ¼” - 23 ¾” = 3/4
  • 20 ¼” - 22 ¼” = 1/2
  • 18 ½” - 20 ¼” = 1/4
  • 16 ⅞” - 18 ½” = 1/8
  • 15 ⅜” - 16 ⅞” = 1/10
  • 14 ⅛” - 15 ⅜” = 1/16
  • Shorter than 14 ⅛” = 1/32*

*Ward-Brodt does not carry 1/32 sized instruments

Viola Calculations: (Viola sizes - in inches - refer to the length of the instrument’s body)

  • 27 ⅛” ~ 27 ⅝” = 16 ½”*
  • 26 ⅜” - 27 ⅛” = 16”
  • 25 ⅝” - 26 ⅜” = 15 ½”
  • 24 ⅞” - 25 ⅝” = 15”
  • 23 ¼” - 24 ⅞” = 14” (same body length as a 4/4 Violin)
  • 21 ⅞” - 23 ¼” = 13” (same body length as a 3/4 Violin)
  • Shorter than 21 ⅞” = 12” (same body length as a 1/2 Violin)**

*Ward-Brodt does not carry Violas larger than 16 ½”, but can get them in. A 16 ½” Viola will usually work for individuals with arms long enough to play larger instruments.

**Ward-Brodt does not carry Violas smaller than 12”. However a smaller Violin can be re-strung as a Viola if needed.
